Recognition for Zero Waste Leadership
ELaiolithos – its Luxury Villa Suites & Restaurant received the Gold Distinction Award for Zero Waste, Sustainability and Social Responsibility during the 1st Zero Waste HoReCa Awards Committee Meeting in Athens on July 20, 2023.
Among 53 hospitality businesses evaluated, ELaiolithos was recognized for its outstanding sustainability practices, achieving 95% sustainable operations.
The committee also selected ELaiolithos as one of only three businesses awarded an additional distinction prize for its contribution to responsible hospitality.
This recognition reflects a philosophy that has guided the project from the beginning.

Local Food Within 5 Kilometers
Most ingredients are sourced within a 5-kilometer radius, supporting local farmers and reducing transport emissions. The kitchen follows the philosophy of slow food and seasonal cooking, highlighting Naxos’ agricultural heritage.
Responsible Food Use
Food leftovers are not discarded. They are collected daily and given to nearby livestock, creating a circular relationship between hospitality and agriculture.
Architecture that Respects the Land
The buildings follow bioclimatic design principles and incorporate local materials, reducing energy consumption while blending naturally with the surrounding landscape.
Supporting Local Craft
Textiles and decorative elements are produced using Greek cotton and traditional loom weaving, supporting local women artisans and preserving regional craft traditions.

Its presence has contributed to renewed attention toward the region, supporting local producers, farmers, and artisans while encouraging travelers to discover the authentic inland culture of Naxos.
The Inspiration Behind ELaiolithos
ELaiolithos was created by Eleni, whose deep connection to this region began long before the project itself.
After spending 40 years abroad, including many years in New York where recycling and sustainability were already part of everyday life, Helen returned to Naxos with a vision: to create a place that celebrates the island’s spirit while respecting its natural balance.
Her love for the mountainous villages and their traditions became the foundation for ELaiolithos.
